SAAB Chapter Developments
- 2011

The earthquake, which
struck Japan March 11, claimed the lives of over 10,000
people. Along with the ensuing tsunami, these disasters
are estimated to have caused over $235 billion in
damages. Thousands of survivors have been left homeless,
starving, and without adequate water supply for weeks.
When disaster struck, members of the Student African
American Brotherhood (SAAB) Virginia Beach Chapter
responded with a sense of purpose and a common goal in
mind "commitment to service."

In Macon, Georgia highlights
the excitement of staff and students at
Northeast High School about their SAAB
chapter and what it means for their community.
"I
just want to grow up and not see kids be in
gangs, not get shot on the street. I want to
grow up and see them be successful pharmacists,
doctors and lawyers. That's what I want to see
for the younger generation," said eleventh
grader Jaquan Elam.
Elam is one of
sixteen students a part of a new organization at
Northeast High School in Bibb County. Called Student
African American Brotherhood, the group works to inspire
students to become role models in their school and
community.

Tech Men Have Vision:
New Tech SAAB B2B chapter was recently
invited by the College of Lake County to attend the
Man Up conference. Nearly 20 students attended the
conference on October 28, 2010 along with the
co-sponsors of
B2B,
Joe Alger and Barry Goldman (New Tech social worker
and counselor).
Students
enjoyed a range of motivational speakers, including the
founder of the national SAAB organization, Dr.
Tyrone Bledsoe. Multiple speeches were received
throughout the day, and members and non-member students
alike returned to New Tech campus with a renewed sense
of purpose and commitment to their academic achievement
and their growth as individuals. New Tech’s students
at-tended the conference along with Zion-Benton Township
High School students, high school students from
throughout Lake County, and CLC’s Men of Vision, their
own SAAB chapter. Article taken from the
New Tech Newsletter, pg

SAAB comes to Virginia Beach
Campus:
Guests gathered
for the launch of the Tidewater Community College
(TCC) Virginia Beach Student African American
Brotherhood (SAAB) chapter.
A
core group of TCC instructors, counselors and
administrators were involved in forming this local group
to provide mentoring initiatives for men of color at
TCC’s Virginia Beach Campus.
The goal: to encourage
participants to excel in all areas of life including
academically, socially, culturally, professionally and
in the community. The guest speaker for the group’s
launch was Tyrone Bledsoe, Ph.D., founder of SAAB
nationally. Bledsoe encouraged new members and “welcomed
all men to consider joining the group as they gear up to
serve the community.” -- Jan. 25, 2011

SAAB Chapter took time to engage in a month long
service project in the form of a Food Drive.
The
chapter members strategically placed boxes in
buildings across campus to collect non-perishable
food items to donate to needy families during the
holiday season. Over one hundred items were
collected, along with monetary donations.

On
Tuesday, November 23, the young men took the time to
sort the items and prepare two large boxes for the
family they identified. These boxes along with a
prepared meal of turkey and trimmings will be
delivered to the family on Wednesday, November 24.
An assortment of the food collection was also
donated to the Lancaster Food Pantry.
Through the project, the young men learned
leadership, team building and conflict resolution
skills. Brother to Brother is to be commended for a
successful project and their act of kindness.
